 Kid's Program
Bruce Lee believed that being a good, well-rounded martial artist meant also being a good, well-rounded person.
Our Kids Program reflects this mentality, teaching martial arts and life skills hand-in-hand. Children learn self-defense and athleticism, tempered by an understanding of focus, discipline, and respect.
Give your child benefits and skills they can use now and that will last a lifetime.
Focus
With video games, TV, and the rampant increase of ADD and ADHD diagnoses, children these days seem to just have more trouble focusing. Using a system called movement-based awareness training (MBAT), that disguises exercises to improve focus within the martial arts training, our students learn to stay focused at Ekata, in school, and at home. To learn more about the MBAT system, specially designed by Sifu Ed Monaghan, head instructor and UCLA Professor, click here.
Discipline
Respect and discipline are cornerstones of martial arts training. Students who are learning techniques that could harm others must also learn self-control and respect for those around them. At Ekata, we teach children discipline both through the practice of the martial arts (learning to come to attention, following directions quickly and silently, and completing tasks without complaint) as well as through discussion about good attitude, self-discipline, respect, and other life skills. As such, students learn not only to obey, but also to think about their behavior, so they can constantly improve it.

 Coordination
Whether it is learning to ride a bike or understanding a new language, if you start when you are young, it stays with you forever. Coordination, flexibility, agility, and reflexes are no different. Our students develop all of these attributes in a manner where they can apply them anywhere, not just in the martial arts studio. We teach our children to utilize natural body mechanics to generate speed and power, while also building conditioning, coordination and balance through drill work and calisthenics. This way students develop athletic ability that translates easily into sports and all other areas of life.

Self-Defense
We want our children to be safe on the playground, the street, and in life. Our martial arts curriculum emphasizes all three areas. We use Bruce Lee's system of Jeet Kune Do to teach children practical self-defense they can always rely on. In conjunction with the martial arts, students also learn the importance of conflict avoidance and street smarts—being aware of and avoiding strangers and dangerous situations.

 Confidence
Confident children learn more, participate more, are more social, and, ultimately, become more successful. Confidence may be the most valuable tool a child can have. But, like any other skill, confidence is learned. By setting challenging, achievable goals that emphasize self-improvement rather than competitiveness, Ekata teaches confidence. Students, when regularly accomplishing feats they once thought impossible, learn to think of themselves as capable, and their self-esteem improves correspondingly. Plus, when you possess focus, discipline, athleticism, and you know how to defend yourself, it's hard not to be confident!
